LET THE LIGHT IN

November 18, 2014

This lovely apartment in central Stockholm is not more than a large studio apartment, but with some creative styling, these owners have been able to transform the home into an airy 1 bedroom apartment. We’ve seen an increase in inner walls/partitions made from glass with black trims that creates a divide for privacy while allowing for the space to feel open, airy and bright. The black trim not only has an aesthetically edgy feel, but also serves a safety purpose (I think we’ve all walked into an all too clear glass partition once or twice in our lives, right?). For added privacy, one idea would be to hang a curtain or blind on one side of the glass partition that can easily be drawn closed or open.

As for the colour scheme, this is an extremely important element when working with smaller spaces. Maximising natural light is key, and creating an illusion of added height and depth is something that will certainly make all the difference in enlarging a space- something which is perfectly portrayed in this apartment. The colour palette is muted, the walls and main elements are white, the “fuss” is kept minimal and all the focus is on the 1-strip wood floor (such as Kährs Oak Cornwall), which visually helps to elongate the room by directing the viewer’s eye toward the natural light source. Installing a wood floor in this manner will also enhance the look of the wood grain and maximise the natural wood feeling, as it causes the light to bounce off the floor beautifully. Et voilà, you have a larger space!
