WOOD FLOORING FACTS

WHY CHOOSE KÄHRS WOOD FLOORING?

Natural wood floors provide a warmth and beauty to a space that no other material can provide. There are many other benefits of wood floors as well, such as the value they add to a home, the low maintenance and timeless style. Wood floors are comfortable to walk on and are highly non-allergenic. Wood floors also create an ambience that lasts a long time while being natural and safe for the environment.

Furthermore, choosing a wood floor is being environmentally resposible. Selecting one from Kährs means making an even wiser green decision. Kährs is one of the oldest manufacturers of wood floors in the world. It is also one of the most innovative. Many of Kährs innovations derive from the ambition to contribute to a better environment, like the launch of the multi-layer wood floor in 1941. All made-made products affect the environment. To counteract these effects, Kährs has adopted an ecological approach that permeates in everything they do. The wood used is almost entirely from Scandinavia and Europe, where new growth exceeds that which is harvested. Kährs multi-layer construction allows for the ability to take full advantage of each log, using fewer resources that in solid floor production. This, and other initiatives, earned Kährs the ISO 14001 environmental management certification in 1997. It is this level of dedication that allows us to create and produce floors that are not only beautiful – they also contribute to the well-being of generations to come.

WHAT IS ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORING?

Engineered wood flooring was designed to be more stable than solid wood flooring. Engineered wood floors from Kährs are constructed on a revolutionary multi-layer principle. In 1941, Kährs was granted a patent for a multi-layer wood flooring construction. This was the world’s first engineered wood floor. This method of construction made the floor more stable and allowed the raw material to be utilised in a more environmentally-friendly way. A Kährs multi-layered floor is stable and stays level even during seasonal variations in temperature and humidity.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENGINEERED AND SOLID?

Compared to a solid wood floor, Kährs construction is 75% more stable; it resists warping, buckling and cracking, even as temperature and humidity change throughout the seasons. Multi-layer floors are also more environmentally-friendly than solid wood floors, since the core material is crafted from fast-growing or recycled wood. This means that there is less of a drain on natural resources.

Solid wood floors are also an unnecessary drain on natural resources. Kährs engineered flooring is more eco-friendly than solid wood flooring as we use fast-growing wood species such as pine/spruce wood for our core material, thereby using less of the valuable hardwood surface layer compared to solid wood flooring. Kährs patented its parquet technology in 1941, and since then we have been using it in all our flooring. By applying different characteristics and a variety of thickness of layers in our different product ranges we have created a variety of floors to suit every application.

CAN I SAND A KÄHRS WOOD FLOOR?

Kährs original multi-layer construction uses hardwood down to the joint only, with fast-growing timber below. It can be refurbished in exactly the same way as a solid floor, as sanding of any wood floor is only possible down to the joint. Kährs construction has additional eco-benefits too – and it’s 75% more stable!

WHAT DOES A "FLOATING INSTALLATION" MEAN?

A floating installation is where the flooring is laid down in a glueless manner ontop of a layer of underlay. The individual planks are locked together using a Woodloc® system, and they are not glued or nailed down to the subfloor. By doing this the floor is floating above the underlay, and can be laid ontop of existing tile or marble, without the risk of damaging the subflooring.

WHAT DOES FACTORY-FINISHED FLOORING MEAN?

Today’s wood manufacturers are applying all kinds of new technology to improve the factory finished floor. Factory-finished wood flooring comes ready to install and requires no sanding or protection. The wood is precision-milled to minimise board-to-board mismatch in height, since leveling the joints between neighboring boards with a sander is not an option. With controlled environments and advanced polymers, only a factory finished floor can offer a 12 to 30 year warranty on the floor’s finish, as well as its structural integrity. With so many vendors to select from, you can be sure to find the color and style floor you are looking for from Kährs of Sweden.

SHOULD I CHOOSE A PRE-FINISHED OR UNFINISHED WOOD FLOOR?

Pre-finished wood flooring comes with several coats of protective surface finish already applied in the factory. Because sanding and finishing are not required after installation, a pre-finished floor is completed more quickly and efficiently without the dust, noise and fumes usually associated with the on-site finishing process. You will be able to live, walk and play on a pre-finished wood floor immediately after installation.
