BALI DREAMING

Sarah

Inspired by our Floor of the Month, we are dreaming of the bohemian and tropical island of Bali. Neutral Balinese interiors with a Nordic touch, that together create a calm and harmonious feeling. Raw and natural materials such as linen, wood, rattan and bamboo in neutral white and beige tones, with accents of black that add an edgy feel.

Our Floor of the Month for May, Kährs Pale has a semi-transparent white colour with balanced contrast that allow the warm oak nuances to shine through. The perfect base for a light, nordic style interior.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF WOODEN FLOORING

Sarah

This is a guest blogpost by Caroline Modig on how to care for your wooden flooring and get that timeless finish!

Anyone can vouch for the fact that hardwood flooring is one of the most beautiful design investments that can be made. Its timelessness not only reflects the owner’s impeccable sense of style but also adds character to the space. The colour of the wood, the richness of grain and the exclusivity of it all makes it an alluring flooring option. While classing up the look of a room, wooden flooring can be easily cleaned and a little extra love and care will keep them looking new for a long time to come! So, to keep your wooden flooring protected at all times, especially from damages long-term wear and tear, you must:

• Vacuum lightly or sweep your floor daily with a soft-bristled broom to prevent build-up of dirt, dust and other particles that may scratch the wood’s surface. You can even use a dry microfiber mop to remove the grime that accumulates between the floorboards.

• Try to limit the exposure to direct sunlight by using protective window coverings/blinds to ensure your wooden flooring ages evenly. You can also try and rearrange your furniture periodically to avoid uneven ageing.

• Ensure you get the floors cleaned by a professional or by using a specialised hardwood floor cleaner. The frequency of this activity depends on the kind of traffic and wear and tear the floor goes through. You can even supplement that by adding a maintenance coat every few years or go old school by using the sand and refinish method whenever necessary.

• Prevent moisture damage using a dehumidifier. Moisture damage is common in wooden flooring, but that doesn’t mean damage due to liquid spills (which you must ensure gets cleaned up immediately), but rather damage due to the climatic moisture changes.

In addition to the regular maintenance tips mentioned above, keep the following guidelines in mind to ensure your wood floors look timeless!

• Avoid using use vinyl or tile cleaning products on hardwood flooring.

• Do not use a wet-mop or steam mop to clean wooden flooring as the water can dull the finish and damage the wood.

• Use throw rugs at doorways to help prevent debris from being tracked in and scratching the floor.

• If your wooden floor starts looking dull, try buffing instead of waxing it with acrylic waxes to avoid the flooring from becoming slippery.

• Do not over-wax a wood floor. If a wax floor dulls, try buffing instead. Avoid wax buildup under furniture and other light traffic areas by applying wax in these spots every other waxing session.

• Be selective about the footwear used on wooden flooring. Shoes such as high heels and sports cleats can scratch the surface of the wood and even leave dents on the surface. Pro Tip – Do not wear slippers or footwear while cleaning your flooring as the dirt particles can get trapped under your footwear causing additional scratches.

• Consider investing in an area rug! It prevents wear and tear as well as scratches and scuff marks in high traffic areas. You can choose the area rug to accent the look you want to achieve depending on the style and finish of the wood you’ve chosen.

Pro Tip – The material of the rug can also impact the qualities of the wood, so choose a rug made from natural fibers to avoid damage due to contact of synthetic materials. There are a variety of hand-woven designs to choose from. You can even opt for a luxurious cowhide rug which is both natural and hypoallergenic making it a perfect addition to your natural wood flooring. Take a look at some beautiful floor-rug pairings and get inspired!

• Colour Contrast – Pick a rug that is a complete contrast to the flooring, this will make the rug the focal point of the room will pulling attention to your beautiful hardwood flooring.

• Match the floor – You can even match the rug to your flooring for a beautiful design accent that adds to the overall appeal of the room, while ensuring the floors remain the focal point of the room.

• Tie it in with the upholstery – Match the rug to your upholstery instead of your flooring and add a unique touch to the place while tying in the rug with the desired look.

• Secondary colours – Many hardwood floors have multiple colours in through their grain, you can choose to match the rug with the secondary colour to create a beautiful blend of textures and colours.

URBAN TROPICANA

Sarah

Living in Dubai, we’re fortunate to be in a part of the world that lies between beautiful tropical jungles and cultured urban cities. So why not reflect a combination of both styles in our homes?

We’re currently feeling inspired by tropical greens with a clean and minimalistic urban twist. We suggest updating the typical tropical deco by combining our pure white Kährs Ash Alabaster wood flooring with large green leafy plants, white linen and cotton furniture and small green marble accents; as well as an abundance of neutral tones, natural light and large open spaces to maintain that bright, airy and tropical holiday feeling.

A perfect combination creating that urban tropicana vibe.

ECLECTIC HOME IN LYON

Sarah

This incredible apartment in Lyon, France features an earthy, neutral colour palette throughout the base as well as in the eclectic furnishings (well hello there gorgeous Eames armchair!) and art; and has three different patterns in the wood flooring – including a diamond, chevron and herringbone pattern – all in the same aged wood and colour. An incredibly interesting and beautiful combination that still manages to create a sense of harmony despite the many different elements.

ARMY GREEN TREND

Sarah

We are loving the current army trend that’s been popular on the fashion scene this season. The various tones of olive green, in combination with other natural tones and small touches of metallic golden tones makes for a beautifully elegant combination. It is that perfect balance between those rustic, natural elements and the luxurious metallic textures that makes this interior design scheme beautiful, intriguing and appear effortless. A perfect mix of elegant and bohemian.

Select our natural Oak Camino by Kährs Artisan Collection as a rustic, handscraped and lively base for the interiors. The oiled surface, along with its texture, will add a natural fragrance to the interiors- reminiscent of the forest. Combine the floor with decor in army green, khaki, white, brown and black tones for a beautiful effect.

INTO THE WILD

Sarah

With Earth Hour upon us this weekend, we’re feeling really inspired by all things nature, earth and sustainability, and with increasing talks about bringing nature indoors, we are looking to Africa for its strong cultural bond with nature and the wilderness.

The use of all-natural materials such as wood, stone, jute and plants such as seagrass has consistently placed African craftsmanship on the proverbial interior design map, especially in today’s sustainability-conscious age.

As a base, we’re loving Oak Earth by Kährs Artisan Collection, which has a rich brown colour that varies from a light gold to dark and sultry soil. The wood floor’s handscraped and oiled surface also further enhances its natural feeling and provides a very special comfort underfoot. As often seen in tribal/ethnic-inspired African interiors, we recommend combining this wood floor with other earthy tones and natural materials- ranging from light creams, to golden caramel and dark tones to create beautiful and timeless harmony.

MEXICAN SUMMER

Sarah

When we think of Mexico, we think of white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, beautiful aged wood and intricately patterned textiles. And dreamy, romantic summers. Bring a piece of Mexico into your home with Kährs Oak Cancun. This wood floor is reminiscent of Cancun’s iconic sandy beaches with its elegantly muted yellow, grey and white-toned stain and natural oak texture.

Stepping away from the typically colourful style, we suggest opting for a more neutral take on classic Mexican interiors. Neutral does not have to be boring! By playing with different natural textures, materials, tones and patterns typical to the Mexican heritage and culture, you can achieve a more stripped and calming look and feel.

SCANDINAVIA MEETS MOROCCO

Sarah

We’ve talked about our love of Moroccan architecture, interior design and decor items before, but now we want to talk about how to incorporate Morocco’s famous creative blend of African, Arab and Mediterranean decorating style into a contemporary Scandinavian interior.

Scandinavian design is most recognisable for its bright, white, monochromatic, less-is-more scheme. But to create more depth, interest and a cozy bohemian feel in the space, add ethnic Moroccan motifs and decoration patterns with decorative items in a muted colour scheme to match the airy Scandinavian feel. Stick to neutral, earthy tones such as white, grey, brown and cream. Incorporate beautiful signature Moroccan decorative items such as beautifully handcrafted metallic lamps and lanterns, leather pouffes, the famous handira wedding blanket and Beni Ourain rug, a luxurious wool pompom blanket– the list goes on.

We suggest balancing out the bright look with a luxurious walnut wood floor such as Kährs Walnut Vermont– a dark floor with a natural, lively grade which contains knots and colour variation. The softness of the wood, combined with the golden-brown tones of the walnut will create a warm look and feel underfoot.

We love the timeless and luxurious Moroccan style, and we love the Scandinavian sleek look – so why not combine the two to create an even more beautiful space?

WANDERLUST

Sarah

Do you ever daydream about travelling and discovering exotic, fascinating places around the world? Then you’ve probably got a case of this:

wanderlust
ˈwɒndəlʌst/
a strong desire to travel

This autumn we’re not only still seeing a strong presence of natural materials, but also the concept of bringing pieces of the world into your home. Even if you are unable to travel so far, you can bring in exotic, vintage worldly elements into your home. By keeping the tones neutral, you create a common thread for an overall calm, harmonious and romantic bohemian feeling in your home.

And what better to match worldly interiors than a beautifully aged, rugged and rustic wood floor by Kährs Da Capo Collection? Namely Indossati – an extremely rustic board with knots and cracks which gives it a very old look. The lightly smoked and white stained surface gives the floor a fresh and natural bohemian look that we love!
